Apple announced there had been 15 billion app downloads since its launch in July of 2008. There are over 425,000 apps in the store, of which 100,000 have been explicitly designed for the iPad tablet.
From January 2011 to July 2011 alone, 5 billion apps that have already downloaded, and the rate of downloads increases exponentially. To cope with this significant increase in demand, Apple has opened a new data center in North Carolina to help balance the load on its servers. It will also be the primary center for Apple’s new cloud services, launching this fall.
Users accustomed to their Mobile Me service will find those features handled in the cloud come this fall for free; users were previously paying an annual subscription price of $99. Apple’s MobileMe never reached the goals of the company, though it does have dedicated subscribers.
