A 31-year-old Swedish science hobbyist, Richard Handl, was arrested for trying to split atoms on his apartment stove in Angelholm, Sweden, but only as a “hobby.”
According to the Associated Press, Handl stated that he has “always been interested in physics and chemistry.” On his blog he stated that he had previously tried cooking Americium, Radium, and Beryllium in 96% sulphuric-acid to blend them easier, but “the whole thing exploded up in the air.”
Not too long ago, Handl contacted Sweden’s Radiation Authority wondering if what he was doing was legal. They responded with a police raid, which probably answered his question. The police arrested him and Handl now faces charges that could land him in jail for up to 2 years.
Handl has stated that he now thinks the project was a bad idea. He also told reporters that “from now on, I’ll stick to the theory.”
