Israel Agrees to Swap 1,027 Palestinian Prisoners for Gilad Schalit, IDF soldier held for over 1900 days After Kidnapped in Gaza
Jerusalem, Israel -
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has Announced that Israel will release 1,027 Palestinian Prisoners in exchange for 1 IDF soldier, Gilad Schalit. Schalit was kidnapped by Palestinians over 1,900 days ago at the Kerem Shalom border crossing at the Gaza border with Egypt.
Previously Israel has tried desperately to gain Schalit's release, despite not even being sure if he was still alive, and had said they would trade "many many" Palestinians for his release. Egypt helped broker this deal as it has often done in the past on various security issues between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Jerusalem Post repots: "The Jewish people is a special people, responsible for one another," Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said at the opening of the cabinet meeting. "Our sages teach that those who save one Jewish life, it's as if they have saved an entire world. Today I am bringing a proposal for the saving of Gilad Schalit in order to bring him back, finally, after five years, to his home, to Israel."
Under the deal, which passed by a vote of 26-3 in favor in a cabinet vote, Israel will release about half upfront, then Palestinians will release Gilad Schalit, then Israel will release the remaining Palestinians, some of who are serving life sentences. The deal dictates some will go to Gaza, some to the West Bank, but some must leave Israeli and Palestinian lands forever.
