So far, 89 people have died in a horrible hospital fire in Kolkata, India as hospital staff fled and left trapped patients to fend for themselves.
"It was horrifying that the hospital authorities did not make any effort to rescue trapped patients," said Subrata Mukherjee, West Bengal state minister for public health engineering. "Senior hospital authorities ran away after the fire broke out."
Police have arrested six staff workers and charged them with culpable homicide, and as a result, the hospital's medical license has been withdrawn so far.
The fire started in the hospital's basement where they used it as a storage facility. Once the fire started, firefighters took nearly an hour to arrive. The narrow streets and congestion made it difficult for rescue workers to get their heavy equipment close enough to be of any use.
