Tucson, AZ –

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has announced in a video released today that she is stepping down from Congress saying she still has more work to do for her own recovery and believes it would be best for Arizona also.

Before she leaves, she will attend President Obama’s State of the Union speech and finish the “Congress on your Corner” meeting she was holding when 19 people were shot last year, including herself. The shooting rampage killed six and wounded 13.

Though several people have expressed an interest in running in the special election to fill her seat, so far neither her husband Mark Kelly nor any of her staff have indicated they would.

Giffords district sits along the U.S. and Mexican border and is considered a swing district.
