Sheriff Paul Babeu Cancels Congressional Campaign; Once Tried To have Ex-Boyfriend Deported
Tucson, AZ -
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has announced that he is cancelling his campaign to run for the 4th congressional district of Arizona. Babeu was involved in a scandal earlier this year when he tried to have his ex-boyfriend deported who was apparently an illegal immigrant.
In making his announcement to cancel, he did not mention the scandal instead saying, "I want to continue to serve as Sheriff and focus on performance and results of public safety. No one can argue that our Sheriff's Office isn't better off than four years ago."
Babeu is the first openly gay sheriff in the United States. Pinal county is located between Tucson and Phoenix.
