Suicide Bomber Kills 96 At Yemeni Parade Rehearsal
A suicide bomber blew himself up and killed at least 96 others during a rehearsal for an upcoming military parade Monday morning. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The AP is reporting that it appeared to be an assassination attempt on Yemen's Minister of Defense, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed. Ahmed was in a heavily fortified area and was not injured.
Yemen, under new leadership, has stepped up its efforts to combat Al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQIY), and this appeared to be a reprisal attack. AQIY is also blamed for a string of attacks against US assets in the area, which have been used extensively to target AQIY strongholds.
The US operates unmanned attack drone aircraft, Coast Guard boats, CIA and other intelligence assets in the restive country.
