An improvised explosive device, IED, has exploded outside the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi, Libya just hours after the U.S. launched a drone strike on Libya terrorist Abu Yahya al-Libi in Pakistan.

Abu Yahya al-Libi was Al-Qaeda’s No.2 in command in Pakistan and reported directly to the current leader, Egyptian born Ayman al-Zawahiri.

“The possibility that this act took place because of what happened to Abu Yahya is, in my personal opinion, a very strong one,” said Noman Benotman, a Libyan former Islamist who is now an expert on militant groups. Benotman said there were several possible scenarios, but one was that the attack was carried out by militants connected to al Qaeda’s north African arm.

Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown last year during the Arab Spring uprising and brought to power a brokered government.

U.S. officials have asked Libyan police to increase their presence at U.S. facilities in Libya.
