Syria Shoots Down Turkish Military Jet Claiming It Was In Syrian Airspace
Both Syria and Turkey have confirmed that a Syrian air defense battery has shot down a Turkish fighter jet, though the jet's exact location remains in dispute. Syria said the Turkish aircraft was flying low, well inside Syrian territorial waters when it was shot down, while Turkey has only said it will wait to see the facts from an investigation, but warned of decisive action against Syria.
The actions threatens to open a new dimension into the near civil war conflict in Syria that has been raging for over a year and rebel forces attempt to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as part of the regional uprisings last year known as the Arab Spring.
Turkey is a founding member of NATO and has the second largest army in the alliance.
