American actor Andy Griffith has died at the age of 86 according to WITN of Greenville, NC who has reported that a close friend of Griffith made the announcement. Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie later confirmed Griffith’s Death.

According to Former UNC President Bill Friday, Griffith dies at his home in Dare County, North Carolina.

Griffith was best known for his roles on The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush on November 9, 2005.

Griffith was born in Mt. Airy, NC., and starred in the CBS television show The Andy Griffith Show from 1960-1968. The show went on to syndication for 25 years. He later starred in Matlock from 1986 to 1995 in which he played Ben Matlock.

In 2000, Griffith underwent quadruple heart-bypass surgery and in 2007 had hip surgery after a fall.

After a divorce in 1972 from his wife Dixie, he got custody of his son Sam who later died of Alcoholism. Dixie got custody of their daughter.
