A US Airways flight from Reagan National to Charleston, SC became stuck on the tarmac as the surface began to sink in the blistering heat being experienced across much of the nation on Friday.
The plane's left rear landing gear sank into a rut as the pavement gave way to the 100 degree heat and immobilized the plane. The tug that usually pushes back the airplane was unable to free the plane.
The 35 passengers on board were taken off while a larger tug was brought in to pull the plane out of the rut and onto solid ground.
After the three hour delay, passenger re-boarded the plane and it departed safely to Charleston, SC.
