According to reports, the gunman bought a ticket to the 12:05am premeir of the movie 'Dark Knight Rises', and shortly after the movie started, he exited the theater through an emergency exit. There, where he had parked his white car in advance, where he put on personal armor protection and armed himself with at least 3 guns. He then re-entered the theater through the emergency exit he used when he left and threw a canister that exploded. Then say police and witnesses, he began firing at his victims.
As people tried to make their way to an exit, he fired on them as well, police only began to remove the dead this evening.
One of the youngest confirmed killed in the incident is a three month old infant. 23 of the most severely injured victims were taken to the University of Colorado Hospital according to Dr. Comilla Sasson, assistant professor of emergency medicine in the School of Medicine.
As the bullets continued to be fired, at least one passed through a wall and hit a victim in another theater.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates.
"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.
FBI spokesman Jason Pack said there's no indication in the investigation so far of any connection to terrorism.
Aurora police spokesperson Frank Fania has said "A gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon (were) found inside," he said.
Police found the suspect sitting in his car and he was taken into custody earlier this morning and Holmes told police he was "the joker", but no motive was released by police. Police said he was dressed in black and was caught near his car in the parking lot of the theater. Also found with Holmes was a throat protector, groin protector, gas mask, black tactical gloves and other personal armor protection equipment.
Used in the massacre and found with him were 2 Glock .40 caliber hand guns, one single barrel pump action Remmington shot gun and an AR-15, commonly called an assault rifle and capable of using a high capacity magazine. Police say all of them were bought legally, the first one being back in May and the last one just two weeks ago. Currently five states ban so called assault rifles, CA, NY, NJ, CT and MA.
According to investigators and other reports, Holmes had ordered his tactical protection gear online and had it shipped 2nd day air.
An unidentified victim in the shooting.
Investigators have learned that the shotgun was purchased from the Bass Pro Shops in Denver. In a statement, the sporting goods store said, "Our Denver store followed federal requirements [with] sale of 1 shotgun, 1 handgun" to Holmes."
Once police arrived at the Holmes' apartment, they discovered his home had been booby-trapped. Police described the booby-traps as "very sophisticated" and contained "flammable explosives", other gun powder and ingredients used in fireworks. Police did say he informed them of his home being booby-trapped, and that apparently was the last thing he has said and since become uncooperative.
Dozens of residents nearby have been evacuated and fire officials said they are on scene and standing by.
Aurora's police chief says the "Explosives appear 'very sophisticated' and police could be at scene 'for hours or days." Police are using a fire truck's ladder to enter Homles' third floor apartment in the 3-story brick building.
