Missouri congressman Todd Akin has stated that in cases of legitimate rape, a woman’s body has ways to prevent her from becoming pregnant.
The conservative Republican had been asked during a recent interview if he supports abortions for women who have been raped when responding to that question.
“It seems to me first of all from what I understand from doctors that’s really rare, … If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” said Akin.
Akin later attempted to clarify things in a follow-up email saying that he misspoke with “off the cuff” remarks. But he did not indicate on which topic he misspoke about during his interview with television station KTVI.
Republican candidate Mitt Romney and VP candidate Paul Ryan’s campaign have said they disagree with Akin.
Akin is battling to be reelected to the Senate against incumbent Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill who described his comments as “offensive”.
