Mozilla had confirmed reports that it, along with Foxconn, are jointly building a new Smartphone or Tablet with their own operating system.
Mozilla is the maker of Firefox and is the world’s largest not-for-profit software maker and Foxconn is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer according to revenue, building popular Apple, Sony and Samsung products such as the iPhone, iPad, Galaxy Android phone and more.
Gong Li, head of mobile devices and president of Asia operations at Mozilla said, “We can make a difference if we can achieve a market share of about 10 per cent,” hoping that others such as Sony, LG, ZTE, and Huawei prove successful in selling a Mozilla/Firefox phone and OS, and chipping away at both Apple and Android market shares.
Foxconn has been more shy about discussing the deal because it already manufacturers large contracts for Apple and Samsung, among other electronic makers and designers and it is believed by industry analyst Foxconn does not want to upset current revenue.
Rumors have been circulating that Foxconn wanted to move beyond being just a behind-the-scenes manufacturer on contract.
An estimated 20 mobile and wireless carriers have signed up to sell the new devices which are expected to hit the market in July of this year.
