Italian authorities have confirmed after an autopsy that actor James Gandolfini, 51, died of a heart attack. Additionally, family friend Michael Kobold said: “died of a heart attack of natural causes… nothing else was found in his system.”

The 51-year-old actor died while in Italy yesterday and has since been turned over to a funeral director in Italy and the family is awaiting Italian government approval for his body to be returned to the United States where his family plans t bury him in New York Thursday, Friday or Saturday of next week.

Gandolfini was known for his role as Tony in the HBO hit series The Sopranos.

Gandolfini was in Rome at the Hotel Exedra when he began suffering from his heart attack and was rushed to Policlinico Umberto I hospital in central Rome after his 13-year-old son Michael called for help.

According to Dr. Claudio Modini, who was in charge of the emergency department the night Gandolfini was brought in, officials spent 40 minutes trying to revive him but that he was “practically dead” upon arrival.
