Jose Maria Madiedo, a professor at the University of Huelva, recorded an asteroid smash into the moon traveling at 38,000 mph, creating a flash so large and bright, it was visible on earth with the naked eye.  The event happened back on September 11, 2013, but was only recently published by the Royal Astronomical Society, RAS.

The impact had the equivalent of 15 tons of TNT, and the afterglow from the impact lasted roughly 8 minutes.

The asteroid was approximately the size of a refrigerator, therefore was small enough that had it came to earth, it would have burned up in our atmosphere.
