According to the Centers for Disease Control, CDC, the mosquito-borne disease chikungunya is on the rise on Florida. The disease is spread from mosquitos to humans and then infected humans back to mosquitos.
Symptoms of the virus include aching joints and arthritic-like pain which lasts can last for months. There is currently no cure and is rarely fatal except in elderly people or those with weakened immune systems.
About 60% of all cases are in Florida, and especially along the I-4 corridor. Chikungunya was brought into the country from the Caribbean by an infected traveler.
