A shootout with Volusia County Sheriff deputies early Tuesday has left a man dead and a pregnant woman injured.
According to deputies, the incident started when they tried to pull over a pickup truck with a burned taillight on State Road 40 in Barbeville. As the responding deputies were talking to the occupants of the car, the passenger pulled out a gun and shot at the deputies.
The deputies returned fire and struck the gunman who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pregnant woman was struck in the shoulder. She was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. It is not clear who shot her.
Neither of the two deputies sustained any injuries.
Investigators have not released the name of either the pregnant woman or her male companion.
As per standard procedure, both deputies have been put administrative leave and will be investigated by Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
