A white police officer in Alabama has been charged with murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black male.
Aaron Smith, 23, an officer with the Montgomery Police Department has issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday. Smith was arrested and had bond set at $150,000.
Prosecutors say that Smith shot and killed Greg Gunn around 3:20 a.m. last Thursday. Smith got out of his vehicle and approached Gunn on foot after deeming him “suspicious.”
Smith told investigators that he searched Gunn and that a struggle began. Smith tried to use non-lethal force six times to regain control until Gunn picked up a weapon. Smith then shot and killed Gunn in response.
An attorney representing Gunn’s family said that the man had been walking home from a friend’s house when approached by the officers. The weapon that Smith claims were being used against him was painted cane that had been laying at that spot for about two or three weeks.
Since the shooting, there have been multiple protests in Montgomery.
The State Bureau of Investigations will be investigating the shooting and will present their findings to a grand jury.
