Gainesville, Fla.

Law enforcement officers in Gainesville were forced to shot and kill a man walking around with an assault rifle at an apartment near the University of Florida.

Alachua County Sheriff responded to the Majestic Oaks Apartments off SW 20th Avenue after receiving a call from Robert Dentmond.

Dentmond told 911 he had an M-16 rifle and that he wanted to shoot himself.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Dentmond with an AR-15 style assault rifle.

Officers with the Gainesville Police Department soon joined Sheriff deputies.

At one point, Dentmond did put down his weapon but refused to walk away from it. A few minutes later he then picked up the rifle and began walking towards an occupied building.

Dentmond was told on multiple occasions to drop his weapon but he did not comply. He was then shot by law enforcement.

Dentmond was taken to UF Health Gainesville but was pronounced dead.

All of the officers and deputies involved in the shooting are being placed on administrative duties while an investigation takes place.
