A shark bit a woman on Wednesday while swimming off the beach in Melbourne.
According to Brevard County Fire Rescue, the 42-year-old New Jersey woman was bitten in waist-deep water about a quarter-mile from a lifeguard tower near 2999 S. Highway A1A. The incident happened at about 3:30 p.m.
The woman sustained a bite to her buttocks and thigh along with a deeper bite on her left hand and wrist.
Emergency crews took the woman to the hospital. She had been drifting in and out of consciousness. Her condition is not known at this time.
The attack is the fifth shark attack along Brevard County’s shoreline this year.
