New ATC Changes At Chicago's O'Hare Airport Reduce Midair Collision Chances

In an effort to reduce the risk of midair collisions, new air traffic control procedures have begun at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. This change was prompted by a pair of near missed at the airport in 2011, in which planes came within a few hundred feet of each other during two separate incidents.

Mid-Air Collision Almost Happened At Washington's Reagan National Airport

There was a near miss involving three airplanes at Washington's Regan National Airport on Tuesday. All three planes were regional commuter planes for U.S. Airways witn 192 passengers and crew on board and the air traffic controller is being blames for the incidnet by the FAA.

According to the FAA, the airport changed the direction for take offs and landings as winds shifted but failed to communicate the information to an inbound plane who subsequently came within 12 second of hitting two departing planes taking off from the airport.

Air Traffic To Northeast Delayed Or Cancelled Due To Fire At FAA Center Handling Flow Systems

Air Traffic from parts of the southeast U.S. and some other areas into the Northeast have suffered significant delays and cancellations due to a fire at an FAA operating center, the William J. Hughes Technical Center, which handles traffic flow systems. Those systems allow the FAA to issue "ground stops" and "ground delays" to specific airports when destination airports are too busy and other reasons.
