Google Launches "Google Fiber" Internet In Kansas City, Says Its 100x Faster Than Cable

Google has launched its Google Fiber internet service in Kansas City, Missouri today and claimed the broadband internet service will achieve speeds 100 times faster than cable and telecommunications companies can provide.

Google is offering two plans, one for $70 a month which is for internet only and another for $120 which will include broadcast TV along with internet service at 1 gigabyte per second internet speeds and 1 terabyte of cloud storage.

AOL To Sell 800 Patents To Microsoft For $1.06 Billion

AOL has announced it it selling 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.06 billion, patents include advertising, search, content generation, social networking, mapping, multimedia, and security, plus other "core" technologies. AOL will still have about 300 patents after the sale.

AOL has been limping along as the broadband era surpassed dial-up, something AOL was famously dominate in. Revenue at AOL is just a fraction of what it used to be 10 years ago and the company has been looking for ways to stop the hemorrhaging of money and turn its fortunes around.

FCC To Make High Speed Internet Available To Homes of Poor for $10

The FCC, Federal Communication Commission, will soon be rolling out its new high speed internet initiative, bringing service to the estimated 100 million residents who can not afford it for about $10 a month.

In touting its new plan, the FCC said America is falling behind, now one of the slowest industrialized nations to bring high speed internet to the population at large. Also noted was the ability of low income children to learn and have more resources to get the educational tools they need to compete against their counterparts at higher income levels.
