Astronomers Discover Moon Is Suddenly Loosing Orbit; Projected To Hit Earth In 30 Years

Astronomers working with NASA have discovered that the moon's orbit has degraded sharply and is slowly loosing orbit. The discovery was first made by Jeff Harrington at American Lunar Institute and was subsequently confirmed by scientist in England and Australia.

Though Harrington said there is no explanation as to why the moon's orbit is degrading, based on calculation, the moon will impact earth in about 30 years.

Asteroid 2013ET To Fly By Earth This Weekend

Yet again Earth will have an asteroid passing by this weekend but not as close as recent flybys. The 80 meter asteroid was discovered last Sunday. The reason for the short notice is due to its size most search telescopes cannot pick it up till it gets near Earth.

The asteroid will be fly by 604,500 miles away from Earth which is about 2 ½ the distance between the Earth and the Moon. The asteroid named 2013ET can be seen at night but only with sophisticated amateur telescopes. At its nearest point it will be in the daytime sky and not visible.

International Timekeepers Are Adding Time To Saturday Night (For Real)

Later tonight, everyone on earth will be granted a little extra time as International Timekeepers will be adding one second to Saturday night. Clocks will have the unusual reading of 11:59:60 before going to 12:00am. What are you going to do with your extra free time?

The timekeeper say this is needed to adjust for earths slowing rotation due to tidal effects of the moon (which is slowly getting closer to earth) and our atomic clocks (the most accurate timeclock available to humans) are running just a tad fast.

Russian Weather Satellite Elektro-L Captures Highest Resolution Image Of Earth

The Russian weather satellite Elektro-L, or Электро-Л in Russian, has captured the highest resolution picture of earth ever taken so far from an altitude of 22,500 miles above earth as it sits in a geosynchronous orbit.

Until recently, Russia had to rely on US and European weather satellites for data in order to make weather forecasts for its residents. In January of 2011, Russia launched the Elektro-L weather satellite, giving Russia its own images of science and meteorology.

Super-Moon To Appear Largest To Earth On Saturday; Coincides With Moon's Perigee

May's full moon on Saturday coincides with its perigee and will appear extra large in the night sky about 11:35pm.

Astronomers both professional and amateur will be treated to a special event this Saturday as the full moon appear very bright and larger than life while making its perigee, or closest approach to earth. This is just one of the six celestial events that will happen in May.

Comet C/2011 N3 (SOHO) Plunges Into Sun And Vaporizes

Scientists with NASA and Lockheed Martin were able to observe comet C/2011 N3 (SOHO) plunge in a suicide dive towards the surface of the sun with new satellites now in place closer to the sun.

The event happened last July but only now are they beginning to see and understand what happened.

The comet was traveling at a rate of aprox. 1 million miles an hour as it began to reach the 1,000,000-degree Fahrenheit corona.

NASA Warns of CME Hit Tomorrow, Expect Geomagnetic Storms, Expect Signal Loss On Your Cell Phone

NASA has issued a Geomagnetic warning following a large coronal mass ejection, CME, from the sun. The storm will affect those at higher latitudes and large aurora's should light up the northern skies provided there are clear skies.

The CME is also carrying significant solar radiation that will also affect communication satellites and mobile phone users may see some intermittent signal loss in lower latitudes as far south as Florida.

NASA Satellite Captures Image Of UFO Near Mercury

A NASA satellite has captured an image near the planet Mercury some think is a UFO.

The object in question has not been previously seen in that location, or anywhere nearby. The Heliospheric Imager-1 telescope snapped the picture above on December 1st, 2011. Discovery News says YouTube user siniXster used the U.S. Navy's SECCHI website to gather the images and create a video of the "extraordinary extraterrestrial encounter."

NASA Finds New Earth, Kepler-22b, Kepler Telescope Makes Discovery; Planet is Just Like Earth

NASA has announce that its Kepler telescope has found another earth, nearly identical in all ways but larger. Kepler was launched in 2009 to look for other planets. The new earth planet has been named Kepler-22b but hopefully a less sterile name can be found.

The new earth comes complete with 72 degree temperatures, water, and maybe... Starbucks?

Making the case stronger is that it orbits is in the "Goldilocks" zone, not too close to its sun to boil and bake everything, but not so far away that everything is a frozen wasteland.

Russian Mars Spacecraft Phobos-Grunt Could Hit Earth Instead of Going to Mars

Moscow, Russia -

After a successful launch at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan by the Zenit-2 booster rocket last night, the Russian Mars Spacecraft may hit the earth instead.

After the Phobos-Grunt craft successfully separated from the booster rocket it was due to fire its engines twice to break away from a low earth orbit and being making its way to Mars moon Phobos to land and being scientific research.
