FDA Approves "Plan B" Pill To All Women 15 And Older Without Prescription

The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has approved the controversial morning after pill called Plan B for all girls and women 15 years and older without a prescription.

The FDA says the change was not directly related to a federal court order last month ordering the pill to be made available after the court said it could not find any rational scientific basis for limiting the pill's sale to girls as young as 15.

RECALL: Salmon Tested Positive For Listeria At Whole Foods Stores

The FDA has issued a recall of salmon sold at Whole Foods stores after testing positive for listeria, which is a deadly pathogen especially to children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

The recall involves 4-ounce Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, both cold-smoked and sliced, which contain the lot number 7425A2298B and a UPC code of 0 99482 40880 0.

The tainted salmon were sold in stores in Florida, plus other stores in Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Utah.

FDA Considers Approval Of Drug That Can Prevent Aids

The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, will consider approving a drug that studies have shown can prevent aids, the viral infection the attacks the immune system. The approval is likely to be target to specific "high risk" people such as men who have sex with other men and men who's female partner has HIV and was shown in studies to have a 42-75% chance of preventing aids.

Recalled Diamond Pet Food Sickens 14 People Due To Salmonella, No pets Affected

So far 14 people in nine states have been sickened by contaminated dog food made by Diamond Pet Foods in its Gaston, S.C. plant. The pet food had been on recall due to contamination by salmonella.

It is the same plant that years ago produced food contaminated by toxic mold that killed dozens of dogs, federal officials said Friday. The CDC and the FDA are investigation Diamond Pet Foods and the plant.

Tuna Used In Sushi Being Recalled Across Nation Due To Salmonella

The Moon Marine USA Corp. of Cupertino, Calif., also known as MMI, is recalling 58,828 pound of yellowfin tuna used by sushi restaurants across the country following an FDA report showing there has been an outbreak of salmonella in 21 states and the District of Columbia.

The potentially contaminated fish is used in sushi and sashimi dishes at sushi restaurants and grocery stores and was sold under the label Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA, though tracking it down has been difficult due to the number of middlemen and distributors involved.

RECALL ALERT: Johnson & Johnson Grape Flavored Infant Tylenol

Johnson & Johnson has issued a recall for over 574,000 bottles of its grape flavored infant Tylenol due to a dosing problem after numerous parents had complained about the dosing problem.

If you think you have a bottle of the recalled infant Tylenol, you should return it to the store you bought it at for a refund, even if it is already opened.

Coca-Cola Says It Alerted FDA About Fungicide Contaminated Oranges

Yesterday the FDA announced that some imported oranges from Brazil would be stopped at the U.S. border due to tests showing they were contaminated with a fungicide used in Brazil. In the announcement, the FDA only said an "unnamed" company alerted them to the test results.

This morning Coca-Cola said that it was the company that alerted the FDA and that it's stringent quality control and testing program successfully caught the contamination.

The fungicide used in Brazil is prohibited in the U.S.

FDA Revokes Approval for Breast Cancer Drug Avastin Saying Side-Effects are Deadly

The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, revoked the approval of the breast cancer drug Avastin despite impassioned appeals from those who say it saved their lives.

In making the ruling, FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg said there has been no evidence the drug is actually helping women's breast cancer but is delivering deadly side effects instead and said that statistically, it has not proven to be effective at extending or improving the quality of life of breast cancer patients.

Vita Seafood, a division of Vita Food Products, is recalling 8,088 individual 4 oz. packages of its Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon. They say the salmon may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which is known to cause Listeriosis, a very deadly foodborne illness.
