Tropical Storm Andrea Approaches Florida With Heavy Rains

Miami, Fla. -

Tropical Storm Andrea is roughly 160 miles west of Tampa, Florida moving NNE at 14mph and is expected to make landfall along Florida's Big Bend area. The maximum sustained winds are 60mph.

Heavy rains have already started hitting most of Florida from Fort Myers to West Palm Beach, Orlando, Gainesville and the Tampa area.

After making landfall, Andrea is expected to make its way NE over Valdosta, Georgia and southeast Georgia before moving onto South Carolina.

SWAT Team Kills Gunman Holding Georgia Firefighters Hostage

SWAT teams have killed the gunman who took Five Gwinnett County firefighters hostage earlier today in a Suwanee, GA home after responding to a 911 medical emergency call. Four remained after the gunman had released one of them before eventually being shot by the SWAT team.

Minutes before the police announcement, one big explosion followed by several smaller ones or gunshots were heard in the Suwanee neighborhood about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta. A SWAT officer was shot in the hand or arm, but should be fine, said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

Georgia Denies KKK Adopt-A-Highway Membership Citing Organizations Past Disturbances

The state of Georgia and its Department of Transportation has denied an application by the International Keystone Knights of the KKK in Union County to join the Adopt-A-Highway program common across much of the U.S.

The KKK had applied to join the popular program which enlists civic organizations, local businesses and charity groups to help clean up a section of a road or highway and in turn the DOT puts a sign up with the groups name.

The section the KKK wanted to adopt was Route 515 in the Appalachian Mountains.

Herman Cain Drops Out Of Presidential Race, Ending Campaign Due To Continued Sexual Misconduct

As TFNJ reported previously, Herman Cain has dropped out of the 2012 race for the Republican nomination.

Citing a Cain adviser that did not want to be named, Herman Cain had been debating how to drop out but save face. Today in Georgia, outside what was supposed to be his new Georgia campaign headquarters, he along with his wife in attendance, said he was ending his bid, saying family relations were more important. Cain continued to deny any sexual misconduct.

Georgia Executes Troy Davis After U.S. Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Case, Despite Mounting Doubt of His Guilt

Jackson, GA -

Despite mounting doubt from experts and the witnesses to the crime recanting saying they were coerced by police, Georgia has executed Troy Davis for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail outside of a Burger King in Savannah, Georgia.

The state carried out the execution after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to intervene in the case when his attorney filed an appeal with the nation's highest court. Under Georgia Law, even if the governor wanted to intervene, he could not, it is solely up the the state's pardons and parole board.
