NATO Approves Patriot Anti-Missile System For Turkey Angering Russia, Iran And Syria

NATO has approved the deployment of a Patriot anti-missile system in Turkey along the Syrian border angering Russia, Iran and Syria. Turkey had requested the U.S. made defensive system after several incidents of Syria rocket and mortar fire hit Turkish territory, killing a few civilians.

Syria called the move "provocative" and Russia said it opposes the move fearing it will be used for an eventual "No-Fly Zone" over Syria. Russia is a Syrian ally.

NATO Says it Will Consider Turkish Request For Patriot Missiles Immediately

NATO has said that it will consider Turkey's request for patriot missiles immediately. Turkey has requested the missiles after Syrian civil war violence and government forces have repeatedly spread across the border and into Turkey, killing several civilians.

Turkey is a founding member of NATO and the defense alliance has previously said that it will do whatever it takes to defend its ally, Turkey.

Syrian Conflict Spreading To Israel And Turkey As NATO Chief Says It Will Back Its Turkish Ally

As the now 20 month old Syrian conflict continues to rage with no obvious end soon, the conflict has, at times, spilled over into Turkey and now Israel as both countries have seen motor shells fall into their territory.

Israel has fired artillery shells into Syria for two days in response to both days receiving fire from the Syrian side of the border in the Golan Heights. Both were declared direct hits.

British PM David Cameron Opposes Mlitary Action In Iran For Now

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said the British government opposed military action in Iran for now saying sanctions are working and need more time.

This news comes after a british newspaper, The Guardian, reported that the U.K. denied a United States' request to use British air bases for a staging ground for possible military action in Iran.

In the report, the denial was based upon a legal position that military action in Iran would be illegal at this time until there is a resolution by NATO or the United Nations to take or approve some form of action.

Turkey Drawn Closer To War With Syria After More Rocket and Mortar Attacks From Syria

Western nations fear Turkey is becoming closer to launching military action into Syria after yet more rockets and mortar shells hit Turkish territory, a day after Syrian president Bashar al-Assad apologized for two previous incursions into Turkey and promised it would not happen again.

The Turkish military returned fire after a mortar bomb fired from Syria landed in countryside in southern Turkey, the state-run Anatolian news agency reported the governor of Hatay province as saying on Friday.

Syrian Leader Assad Says He Regrets Shooting down Turkish Plane, Would've Been Happy If It Was Israeli

In comments to Turkey's Cumhuriyet newspaper, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad said that he was sorry his army shot down a Turkish airplane on June 22, calling the Turkish people friends and brothers. He added if it were an Israeli plane he would have been happy.

I would not wish it for any plane other than an enemy one. Especially for a Turkish plane, I say 100%, if only we did not shoot it down,... The Turkish people are our brothers and something that would make them sad would never make me happy and it did not. If this was an Israeli plane, of course, I would have been happy."

Turkey Calls For NATO meeting After Syria Shot Down Its Jet Over Mediterranean

Turkey has called for an emergency NATO meeting after finding the wreckage of its downed fighter jet which Syria shot down. Turkey has claimed that after accidentally crossing to Syrian airspace, the jet immediately left and that after it was back into international airspace, Syria shot it down.

Turkey is a founding member of NATO, as it used article 4 of the agreement which says in part that member countries "will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."

Pakistan has sentenced Dr. Shakil Afridi to 33 years in prison under its Frontier Crimes Regulations, FCR, for helping the United States hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden.

Afridi ran a vaccination clinic for the public and also helped to quietly collect DNA samples in Abbottabad of the population for the CIA's search for bin Laden for a decade. Human rights groups have called the FCR abuse because it is a special set of regulations that govern the restive tribal region of Pakistan where clan leaders and militants rule.

Australian PM Julia Gillard's Airplane Breaks down On Her Way TO NATO Summit In Chicago

The VIP airplane that was suppose to be carrying Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has suffered a mechanical failure causing her to be significantly delayed.

Her flight was to leave Townsville but was unable to take off and a replacement airplane is being flown from Canberra, meaning some of her planned bilateral talked with President Obama will have to be rescheduled.
