Arik Air Halts All Domestic Service As Nigeria largest Carrier Struggles With FAAN Union

Arik Air has halted all domestic service and said it is indefinite. International service continues to operate for now, but there has been speculation those will end shortly. The airline has alleged that government corruption has made it unable to fly as it struggles with the FAAN Union, which operated ground services in Lagos.

The company's chairman, Chris Ndulue, said that the country's aviation minister and others were trying to destroy the airline for their own financial benefit and he has also claimed the government raided the airline's offices.

Nigerian Captors Kill British and Italian Hostages During Failed Rescue Attempt

Sadly, a British and an Italian hostage have been killed by their captors after being captured in the northern part of the country, they were killed after a failed rescue attempt was launched by Nigerian forces with British support. They were captured in May of 2011.

Italian Franco Lamolinara and Briton Christopher McManus were murderd by their captors.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said that they believed the men's lives were in "imminent and growing danger" which is what prompted the rescue effort that eventually failed.

Chevron Oil Rig Catches Fire In Nigeria's Delta

A Chevron oil rig operated by one of it's subsidiaries has caught fire located in the Nigerian delta.

Chevron spokesman Scott Walker said the fire started early Monday morning. He said the rig was just off the coast of the country's Niger Delta. The company went on to say they do not yet know what exactly happened and that they are focused on searching for crew members for now.

Nigeria is the 5th largest oil importer to the U.S. behind Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

Nigeria's Arik Air Orders 2 New Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Airplanes

Nigeria's Arik Air on Thursday placed an order for two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental airplanes to be used on its key long-haul routes.

The order, valued at $635 million at list prices, was announced at a signing ceremony at the Corporate Council for Africa’s 8th Biennial US-Africa Business Summit in Washington, D.C.

UN Headquarters in Nigeria Rocked by Car Bomb; 18 Dead, Dozens Injured

Abuja, Nigeria-

A deadly car bomb was detonated on Friday morning inside the UN headquarters after the white SUV which was carrying the explosives rammed through the first two gates, and into the reception office of the UN compound in Nigeria's capital. The UN facility is a compound housing more than 400 workers of 26 UN humanitarian and development agencies, reports CNN.
