Washington Monument To Remain Closed with Discovery of New Cracks from Earthquake

The Washington Monument will remain closed until further notice.  Five new cracks were discovered in the monument, in addition to the 1 inch wide, 4 ft long crack pictured above.

Park officials have said there is a major crack at the very top of the Washington Momunent, and have now found five other smaller cracks.  The area will be fenced off until repairs can be made.  The monument lacks disaster insurance, so funds will likely have to come from an already squeezed federal budget.
