White Smoke, New Pope; The Conclave Has Elected Jorge Bergoglio Of Argentina as Pope Franics

The cardinals meeting in conclave have elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new Roman Catholic Pope, and sent the white smoke signal to let the world know. Bergoglio is of the Jesuit order and has chosen the name Francis and is the 266th Pope.

Pope Francis is 76 years old and was born in Buenos Aires. His parents were Italian immigrants from Italy and was appointed cardinal by Pope John Paul II and is know for his humility by many.

This is the Catholic Church's first Pope from South America.

The Papal Conclave begins as the cardinals seal themselves into the Sistine Chapel to elect the next Pope and leader of the Catholic Church worldwide.

Each of the cardinals and the other 160 papal workers have taken an oath of secrecy, violating that mean immediate ex-communication.

New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan said that he thinks they will have a new Pope by Thursday based on his reading of the mood and dynamics of the cardinals.

The cardinals will remain locked inside the Sistine Chapel until a new pop is elected, casting 2 ballots in the morning and 2 in the evening.

A massive swarm of locust has descended onto Egypt, hitting much of the Giza area and the fertile Nile farming areas. Is this how it happened When Moses warned the pharaoh?

According to Egyptian government figured, an estimated 30-50 million locust have invaded from the west and landed along the fertile Nile river farming areas and in the Giza plateau pyramids.

Government officials from the ministry of agriculture have told people not to attempt to rid the area of the locust by lighting car tires on fire, saying it will not work but can endanger peoples lives.

Pope Benedict XVI Resigns Citing Age And Health Reasons

Pope Benedict XVI has announced that he will step down, effective Feb 28 at 8:00pm Rome time. Pope Benedict was elected to the position in 2005, and will be 86 in April. This is the first resignation of a Pope in 600 years, Pope Gregory XII resigned in 1415 to avert a looming civil war with the church.

Born Joseph Ratzinger, He lived in southern Germany, was elected Pope when Pope John Paul II died. The College of Cardinals, conclave, will convene to elected a new Pope in secret. The new Pope must receive 2/3 of the vote plus one in order to become the next Pope.

Washington National Cathedral To Allow Same Sex Weddings

Washington's National Cathedral has said it will begin preforming same sex marriages. The move is seen as significant because of it's prominent status, its where president's are mourned, speeches are delivered and presidential inaugural services are held and hundreds of thousand of tourist visit each year.

The 106 year old cathedral is the nation's most prominent of the Episcopal churches.

Philadelphia To Combat High STD Rate In Schools With Free Condoms

Philadelphia, PA -

Philadelphia has one of the highest rates of STD transmission rates and will begin attempting to combat the problem by giving out free condoms to students as young as 14 for free.

In what some say is a controversial move, the schools will make condoms available for free in dispensers located in the nurse's office at each high school and some middle schools where the STD problem is the highest.

Egypt's Orthodox Coptic Christian Church Enthrones Its New Leader, Pope Tawadros II

On Sunday, Egypt's Orthodox Coptic Christian Church enthroned its new leader, Pope Tawadros II, in an elaborate four hour ceremony held at the Coptic cathedral in Cairo that was attended by the Muslim Egyptian Prime Minister as well as numerous other government officials.

The Christian Coptic faith is the largest single Christian group in the middle east and makes up about 10% of the Egyptian population and are found mostly in the north of Egypt and in the seaside city of Alexandria.

Federal Judge Orders Tennessee County To Allow Mosque To Open

U.S. District Court Judge Todd Campbell has ordered Rutherford County in Tennessee to allow the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro to open its new mosque immediately and in time for Ramadam, the Islamic holy month which begins this Thursday.

The Islamic center along with federal prosecutors sued Rutherford County for not granting an occupany permit, and in the emergency hearing today, successfully argued that preventing mosque members from using the new 12,000 sf mosque imposed an unfair burden on the Islamic worshipers and that the ban imposed by another judge was religously based.

Catholic Priest, Monsignor William Lynn, Found Guilty In Child Sex Abuse Scandal At Church

Monsignor William Lynn has been found guilty on one count of child endangerment for his part of what the prosecution called a systematic covered of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church in Philadelphia.

Monsignor William Lynn was accused of failing to notify police of suspected or known priest who were sexually abusing children or not taking action against known pedophiles.
