Blackberry Maker RIM Says It Will Cut 5,000 Job As Part Of Restructuring

In an effort to stem the ever encroaching tide of disappointment, Blackberry maker RIM said it will be starting a new restructuring plan and that 5,000 employees will be laid off as a result.

The smartphone maker has suffered numerous setbacks and product launch failures as it struggled to keep up with Apple's iPhone and Google's Android OS smartphones and tablets.

RIM profits were down again on year-over-year earnings, and losses were higher than analysts expectations of $.07 per share, instead loosing $.30 cents per share.

RIM Unveils Blackberry 10 And Shows It Off In Orlando With 2 Separate Conferences

Canadian smartphone maker RIM has unveiled its Blackberry 10 this week in Orlando in two separate conferences, Blackberry World and Blackberry Jam with CEO Thorsten Heins delivering today's keynote.

The company handed out new Blackberries to attendees, but only a light demo version was functional, designed to give people a hint at what's coming with the new Blackberry. And just a hint is what it was, with most of the features of the new Blackberry removed or disabled, and instead showing limited demos and videos showing off what the phone is hoped to be able to do.

Blackberry Maker RIM says Ex-Chief Leaving Board As Mobile Phone Maker Will Focus On Enterprise

The once popular Blackberry phone maker RIM announced its ex-chief Jim Balsillie was stepping down from the board as the mobile phone maker continues to struggle at turning around its fortunes. RIM's shares dropped 9% in after hours trading following the news, adding to that RIM said it will begin to focus on "enterprise" products and move away from consumer devices.

In keeping with recent traditions, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion announced it will not meet its earning expectations again, citing horrible sales of what it hoped would be a saving grace, the PlayBook tablet.

Since 2007 when widespread smartphone use began with the introduction of the iPhone, BlackBerry has been losing market share and was further hobbled with its expensive acquisition of the Palm OS which has netted it nothing productive and the late-to-market PlayBook have continued to pummel the Canadian technology manufacturer ever since.

Blackberry Services Out For 3rd Day, Research in Motion Struggles As Problem Spreads Across Globe

Millions of Blackberry users are entering their third day without text or messaging service, and patchy emails service, along with a long line of other intermitted services.

Initially Research In Motion, the owners and developers of Blackberry smartphones, said they had contained the problem and said it was a switching problem on their private network, but then the problem continued to spread beyond North America to the Middle east, Europe, South America and parts of Asia by Wednesday morning.

Shares of Blackberry Maker RIM Fall $3 billion

At the opening of trading today, the market and investors were not kind to RIM, the once-popular maker of BlackBerry smartphones.

Already today, shares have fallen $3 billion, reducing RIM's market capitalization in a major way. There is a growing sense that the company is in danger of falling too far behind Apple Inc., with its iPhone and iPad, and a host of competitors making devices that run on Google Inc's Android software.
