U.S. Treasury Department Targets Businesses, People, Banks Evading Iranian Sanctions

The U.S. Treasury Department announced Thursday that it has targeted a list of people, banks and businesses that it believes are evading Iranian sanctions.

Businessman Babak Zanjani and the First Islamic Investment Bank were among those targeted what what it says were systematic practices designed to evade international sanctions against Iran.

As part of its enforcement, it has prohibited any of those listed from doing any business with U.S. citizens or businesses, and frozen all assets they had within U.S. jurisdiction.

British PM David Cameron Opposes Mlitary Action In Iran For Now

London, U.K. -

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said the British government opposed military action in Iran for now saying sanctions are working and need more time.

This news comes after a british newspaper, The Guardian, reported that the U.K. denied a United States' request to use British air bases for a staging ground for possible military action in Iran.

In the report, the denial was based upon a legal position that military action in Iran would be illegal at this time until there is a resolution by NATO or the United Nations to take or approve some form of action.

Iran Says It Will Make Deep Cuts To Imported Goods Due To Rising Problems from Sanctions

Iran has said it plans to make cuts to imported goods and urged its citizens to stop buying foreign made mobile phones, cars, clothing and other non-essentials.

Reuters reports that the policies suggest the government is moving the economy onto an austerity footing to resist the sanctions, which have been imposed over Iran's controversial nuclear program and have slashed its income from oil exports this year.

E.U. Close To Imposing Harsher Sanctions On Iran

European nations are closer to imposing new and harsher sanctions on Iran including a ban on most financial transactions, exporting metals and graphites -crucial in steel-making to Iran and import ban on natural gas from Iran.

The agreement is likely to pass on Monday when Foreign Ministers gather in Brussels to vote on the sanctions.

An EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new measures include a ban on financial transactions, with some exceptions for those involving humanitarian aid, food and medicine purchases and provisions for legitimate trade.

Congress Considering more Sanctions On Iran As Its Economy Is Near Collapse

The U.S. Congress is considering more actions against Iran while Europe is also contemplating more sanctions and embargoes against Iran as both attempt to pressure Iran to give up what western powers say is Iran's nuclear weapons plans and production.

Iran has denied it is planing r building a nuclear weapon and said its nuclear technology is for peaceful energy production.

As a result of crippling sanctions already in place against Iran, its currency, the Rial, is plummeted to record lows causing riots in the streets of Tehran.

Iran Arrests 16 "Main Players" As Its Rial Value Plummets Causing Riots

As the value of Iran's currency, the Rial, continues to fall to historic lows due to sanctions and riots break out, state security services have arrested 16 people it says have been manipulating the Rial.

The Iranian judiciary said those arrested "had used an atmosphere of psychological war created by the enemy" and colluded with "certain domestic and foreign groups" to exacerbate conditions."

Ahmadinejad, in a speech this week, also said blamed "22 ringleaders" who the country's intelligence services have determined are causing tension and manipulating currency.

Israeli Prime Minister went on television and made a passionate plea to American voters to election a president that will help Israel draw a "red line" in the sand against Iran and its nuclear program.

Netanyahu has been frustrated with the Obama Administration which as refused to endorse Israeli politics or a military stance yet, saying there is still time and wants sanctions to take hold.

U.N. Nuclear Watchdog Agency Backtracking On How Much Nuclear Material Missing In Iran

The United Nations agency charged with watching global nuclear activities may be forced to backtrack on its claim of just how much nuclear material it says is missing in Iran. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had previously said 19.8kg were missing from the Tehran nuclear facility, Jabr Ibn Hayan Multipurpose Research Laboratory (JHL), but now says the actual amount missing is probably significantly less.

U.S. Increasing Sanctions On Syria And Countries That Support Syria

The United States will be imposing new sanctions that target Syria alog with other entities and countries that have been suporting Syrian president Bashar al-Assad said U.S. officials.

"We will be tightening even further with additional sanctions that drive at both Syrian entities and those who are supporting the efforts of the Syrian government to oppress its own people," the official told reporters travelling [SIC] with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Ghana.

Iranian Oil Exports Are Down 40% As Sanctions Take Hold

According to the IEA, International Energy Agency, Iranian oil exports are down nearly 40% since sanctions have been put into effect against Iran over its nuclear program.

Western nations such as the U.S. and Europe, as well as most of the Middle East believe Iran is covertly developing a nuclear weapons program secretly alongside its stated nuclear energy for electricity needs. Iran has strongly denied any such nuclear weapons program and said their program is only for peaceful energy needs.
