U.S. Senate Votes To Confirm John Kerry As Next Secretary Of State

The U.S. Senate has voted to approve President Obama's nomination of Senator John Kerry as the next Secretary of State, replacing Hillary Clinton after previously announcing she would resigning.

Senator Kerry received well over the 60 votes needed to win confirmation. Only two votes were cast against Kerry.

Kerry ran for president in the 2004 presidential elections against George Bush and lost.

On Friday President Obama cleared up speculation and nominated Senator John Kerry (D-Mass) as the next Secretary Of State, calling Kerry a "perfect choice".

Kerry is already the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations, and ran for the presidency in the 2004 election against George Bush.

"As we turn the page on a decade of war, he understands that we have to harness all elements of American power," Obama said at the White House.

China Blocks News Of Dissident Escape To US Embassy, Crackdowns On Activists; US Diplomat Arrives In Beijing

China's security services have begun a wide-spread crackdown on activists and dissidents in an attempt to find out who helped Chen Guangcheng escape his house arrest and get to the US Embassy and has also been blocking news of the blind dissident's escape.

Chen, who is blind, faked an illness for a prolonged period to get his guards to ease their watch over him and then successfully escaped his house and was taken by a network of activist and dissidents across China to the US Embassy, deemed the only safe place in China for such activists.

Secretary Clinton Says US Will Back Gulf Arabs During Speech At Gulf Security Forum

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at the opening of the US-Gulf Security Formum saying the US will back its regional Arab allies against threats from Iran. She also said the meeting would include discussion about the events in Syria, political progress in Gulf countries, Iran's nuclear program, "and curbing its interference in the affairs of its neighbors."

The Gulf Arab nations have accused Iran of backing violent protests in Bahrain and interfering with domestic issues in their own countries.

Secretary of State HIllary Clinton became the first cabinet level high ranking American government official to visit Libya since the rebels of the National Transition Council, NTC, overthrew former leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi during the Arab Spring uprising that also occurred in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Syria. Protests are still underway in Yemen and Syria.
