Long Time PA Senator Arlen Spector Has Died

We just received word that Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Spector has died at the age of 82 aftering fighting a long battle with cancer.

Spector was recently noted for changing from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party during the twilight of his career.

The senator died from complications from Hodgkins Lymphoma at his home in Philadelphia. He had also battled a brain tumor in the past.

Spector was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980 and represented his district longer than any other currently serving senator.

Mel Martinez Promotes 1% Restaurant Tax To Help Solve Homeless and Hungry

Former U.S. Senator Mel Martinez is proposing a 1% tax on Central Florida restaurants and the money will be used to help the area's homeless and hungry. Martinez is a former secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former U.S. Senator.

Under a plan already in place in Miami, it has helped reduce the 8,000 homeless to around 800, and Martinez thinks the same type of plan will work in Orlando. He estimates it could raise $18 million a year, to help fill the gap that federal and state authorities already give.

Republican Florida state senator Brad Drake wants to bring back firing squads and the electric chair and get rid of lethal injections for death row inmates being executed in Florida, but he will allow them to have a choice between "old sparky" and the firing squad.
