A new strain of gonorrhea that has shown to be highly resistant to medical treatment and medicine is spreading across Europe now accounting for up to 10% of all reported cases. The strain, super gonorrhea, along with regular gonorrhea are the second most commonly spread STI in Europe and the United States. Only chlamydia has more reported cases.
Marc Sprenger, of the ECDC, said the increase in cases of superbug strains meant there was a risk gonorrhea may become an untreatable disease in the near future.
