A mother in New York who left her newborn baby still with its umbilical cord attached, in a nativity scene outside of a church will not face any charges.
According to the New York Police Department, the infant was found wrapped in towels inside the Holy Child Jesus Church in Queens. A custodian found the child on Monday after returning to lunch. There was no one else inside the chapel at the time.
On Wednesday the Queens District Attorney announced that no charges were going to be filed because the child was left in accordance with the states “Safe Haven” law.
Under New York state law, a child can be left anonymously at certain designated safe haven locations. The law does specify that the parent is to hand the child over to the appropriate person.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital but was found to be in good health with no problems.
A priest at the church has said that a young couple at the church is interested in adopting what they are calling a “Christmas miracle”.
